Is paxiel only for depression or crazy people?

Last year I almost lost my mother after a car crash. Ever since then I have been having really bad mood swings and getting angry at the stupidest things. When I went to the Doc he asked if I was depressed or had suicied thoughts or thoughts of killing somebody else(I don’t) & he said ok here try this and come back in 3 weeks to let me know how it worked. But the thing is I thought Paxiel was only for depression or crazy people, and I’m not either, I promise I’m very normal.

paxil is an antidepressant

Paxil is for depression. Your mood swings are a sign of depression.
You may want to learn more about what depression is and is not. Most people who are, do not know it or will not face it.

Depression can also be for a season while you are dealing with a high stress or traumatic event. It doesn’t mean that you will always be on meds or in therapy.

You can get a second opinion too!

Sounds like you may have some level of Post-Tramatic Stress Disorder. The loss or near loss of a loved-one is a common trigger. Also, that event could have destabilized your "panic engine" or "fight-or-flight" mechanism. This happens when your body is constantly exposed to stress chemicals that are intended to be present ONLY in times of grave danger. This is extremely common, though it is not broadly discussed or accepted in general.

Don’t be confused by some of the posts. Paxil (paroxetine) is an antidepressent in the sense that it works on blocking seratonin reuptake (a fancy way of saying it blocks the re-absorbtion of certain brain chemicals to restore "chemical balance".) If you were being treated for depression, however, there are many better choices. Paxil is most often used as a stress reducer or to treat panic disorder. Many people are on Paxil and while I’m certain some may fit the definition of "crazy" most are just normal people who are stressed out.

Paxil is not always well-tolerated, however, so if you are feeling tired, loopy, or your symptoms get worse, do not hesitate in telling your Doc. Two good alternatives are Lexapro and Effexor.

Lastly, there is no shame in being on medication for a mental/mood issue. Would you feel ashamed for taking antibiotics if your throat hurt? Society is not where it needs to be in realtion to mental health issues, but feeling ill/sad/moody/depressed etc. is unacceptable when there are medications that can help….at least in my opinion.
