Motorcycle Accident With 500 Gallon Propane Tank & Leak Stewart’s Meats Thurston County WA
April 19, 2009. Pay attention when driving. Non life threatening injuries for the two riders on the bike. The motorcycle was laid down to avoid rear ending a truck. Somehow the bike got back up on it’s wheels rolling a few hundred feet hitting the propane tank in the Stewart’s Meats parking lot and causing a leak. Thurston County fire handled the leak while the Washington State Patrol investigated the accident. Hwy 507 was shut down in both directions at the Pierce/Thurston county line.

@edsgoldens1 Very well said sir. I just finished 20 years as a FF/AO and our policy was to secure the area and call the regional Haz Mat response group. Another thing I want to point out, why are there civilians walking through the hot zone?

I am a hazardous …
I am a hazardous Materials Technician with 20 years of experience, and I only mean well here….PLEASE-PLEASE DO NOT attempt to plug a pressure vessel with ice! Once a leak has developed, as it did here, they should have backed off and let it all bleed out. Only qualified personnel with specific training (as required by law) can plug or patch a Hazardous Material chemical breach.

that a good way to …
that a good way to try stoping the leak by put water on it with the propane at -44 degrees it should stop the leak long enought to pump out the reamin gas to another truck if its possible if its not then hook a burn line off the tank and burn off the gas at a safe distances

Seems like a funny place for a propane tank…kind of out in the open. Is that a cross road or a parkinglot that it stands by? Maybe the parkinglot to Stewarts Meat store?
